Winter Break Kids Pottery Wheel Camp

Students will learn various techniques on the pottery wheel in this four-day kids camp. Each class is 2-hours in length and will meet four times, Tuesday December 26th - Friday December 29th from 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm. This class allows students to see projects through all the stages that pottery goes through from start to finish including preparing the clay, throwing, trimming, adding and surface decoration. After the camp concludes, projects will be allowed to dry slowly before being bisque fired. Students can choose to return to do the glazing during open studio, or can have the studio glaze their projects for them.

Completed work will be available for pick up within 3-4 weeks.

  • Students will be using white stoneware clay and food-safe glazes.
  • While the studio will provide aprons, it is recommended that students wear clothing and shoes that are okay to get dirty and possibly stained.
  • While we will do everything possible to ensure student projects are successful, there are many variables that can compromise a piece during the various stages it goes through from start to finish. It is a normal part of the pottery process to "lose a few", but we do what we can to minimize that risk. The studio is not liable for any pieces that do not survive.
  • The pottery studio is located in a barn on a private property on IL-71 near I-80 in Ottawa, IL. The specific address and directions will be shared upon booking confirmation.
  • Please be aware that the studio does not have air-conditioning. Wear comfortable, light clothing as the studio can become quite warm during the summer months. Bring a water bottle with a closed top to stay hydrated. The studio is heated during the cooler months.
  • If you have long hair, we recommend securing it to keep it out of your face while working.
  • Remove any jewelry on the hands and wrists prior to class.
  • Long nails can be a challenge when working with clay, if you have the option to file them down before class you will be less likely to gouge your work.
  • We recommend using the bathroom at home before you come if possible.
  • At present we do not have a waiting room. Please notify us if you plan to bring someone to observe the class so we can ensure we have space in the studio and chairs available.
  • Please do not bring children under the age of 6 to the studio. There are many fragile and/or dangerous items in the studio that are very interesting and tempting for little ones to touch.
