Looking for something fun to do for a special occasion, or because you'll be vising the Starved Rock area? Let's make some pottery! We offer two class structures, either pottery wheel or hand-building.
Option 1: Pottery Wheel Class
No prior experience needed for this 3-hour introduction to working on the pottery wheel. We focus on creating a relaxing and memorable experience as we slowly walk through each step of the process.
We start with a behind-the-scenes tour of the pottery studio before moving on to the basics of how to prepare the clay with a technique called wedging. This process will set us up for success once we jump onto the wheel! After preparing our clay, the instructor will provide a demonstration of the five main steps we go through when throwing a piece of pottery on the wheel. Students will then be guided step-by-step through each skill, and provided hands-on-corrections as needed.
Each student will be provided 4 x 1.5 lb balls of clay to practice with throughout the class. At the end of the class, students can choose one piece to keep. Additional pieces can be kept for an additional fee of $10-$15 per piece. This fee covers the cost of the clay, glaze, two firings and the labor to finish your piece after the class concludes.
Option 2: Make & Paint (Hand-Building) Class
Hand-building is a method of working with clay that includes techniques such a as slab, coil, pinch, and sculpting. Our standard Make & Paint project is a mug, however we can customize the piece you want to make based on inspiration you share with us! Whether you want to make a soup bowl, a succulent planter, or something fun you found on Pinterest, we will walk you through the steps on how to make your customized piece of pottery.
Once the piece has been formed, we will use colorful underglazes to paint your pottery in any design pattern you wish!
Please note that hand-building classes do not take place on the pottery wheel.
When Are Projects Available for Pick Up?
After your class, pots will be allowed to dry slowly to avoid cracking. They will then be put through the first firing, called a bisque firing. After they've been bisqued, the pots will be glazed and fired again. Each firing takes roughly 30+ hours from start to finish.
Finished pots are usually ready for pick up within 3-6 weeks of the class. You will be notified once they are ready for pick up via your preferred method of communication (text, email). Pots must be picked up within 30 days of the glaze firing. Shipping can be arranged for $12/box.
Who Can Participate
We welcome students aged 8-adult. Children as young as 6 may also attend, however we ask that an adult guardian assists the child throughout the class.
For a Pottery Wheel Class, we can accommodate up to 8 students at one time. For a Make & Paint Class, we can accommodate up to 12 students at one time.
