Date Night on the Pottery Wheel
CLASS STRUCTURE:
Couples will take a behind-the-scenes tour of a professional pottery studio. Afterwards be guided through the steps of how to make your very own functional piece of pottery on the wheel!
*Listed price is for the couple*
INCLUDES:
- Very small class size of up to 2 couples
- Customized instruction based on ability level
- Selection from 2 Brent Model B & 2 Shimpo VL Whisper Wheels
- Use of studio apron
- Use of all studio tools
- Firing & glazing of up to 1 project per person
After class, couples can decide whether they would like to return at a later date to glaze their own pieces, or if they would like the studio to glaze them. The bottoms of projects will be cleaned up and stamped with the maker's name or initials on the bottom. They will be allowed to dry very slowly before being fired to 1940 degrees to transform it into bisqueware. They will be glazed with the maker's glaze choice and fired again to 2,160 degrees.
Completed work will be available for pick up within 4-6 weeks.
Additional pieces can be kept and glazed at an additional cost of $20 per piece.
Additional Notes:
- Students will be using white stoneware clay and food-safe glazes.
- While the studio will provide aprons, it is recommended that students wear clothing and shoes that are okay to get dirty and possibly stained.
- While we will do everything possible to ensure student projects are successful, there are many variables that can compromise a piece during the various stages it goes through from start to finish. It is a normal part of the pottery process to "lose a few", but we do what we can to minimize that risk. The studio is not liable for any pieces that do not survive.
- The pottery studio is located in a barn on a private property on IL-71 near I-80 in Ottawa, IL. The specific address and directions will be shared upon booking confirmation.
- Please be aware that the studio does not have air-conditioning. Wear comfortable, light clothing as the studio can become quite warm during the summer months. Bring a water bottle with a closed top to stay hydrated. The studio is heated during the cooler months.
- If you have long hair, we recommend securing it to keep it out of your face while working.
- Remove any jewelry on the hands and wrists prior to class.
- Long nails can be a challenge when working on the wheel, if you have the option to file them down before class you will be less likely to gouge your work.
- Our bathroom is a small outhouse building near the studio. We recommend using the bathroom at home before you come if possible.
- At present we do not have a waiting room. Please notify us if you plan to bring someone to observe the class so we can ensure we have space in the studio and chairs available.
- Please do not bring children under the age of 6 to the studio. There are many fragile and/or dangerous items in the studio that are very interesting and tempting for little ones to touch.
