Vase Coil Pot Hand-Building Class | 4 Weeks
Students will build a vase out of 3 lbs of clay using the coiling hand-building method. Each class is 2-hours in length and will meet four times. This class allows students to see their projects through all the stages that pottery goes through from start to finish including preparing the clay, coiling, adding surface decoration as desired, and glazing.
Class meets every Wednesday from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm January 10th - January 31st, 2024.
CLASS STRUCTURE:
Week 1 | Coil Building (January 10th)
Week 2 | Coil Building (January 17th)
Week 3 | Surface Decoration (January 24th)
Week 4 | Glazing (January 31st)
Between week 3 and 4 student work will be allowed to dry out then fired to 1940 degrees to transform it into bisqueware.
Once glazed, student work will be fired again to 2160 degrees.
Completed work will be available for pick up within 2-3 weeks.
ADDITIONAL NOTES:
- Students aged 15-adult are welcome
- Students will be using white stoneware clay and food-safe glazes.
- While the studio will provide aprons, it is recommended that students wear clothing and shoes that are okay to get dirty and possibly stained.
- While we will do everything possible to ensure student projects are successful, there are many variables that can compromise a piece during the various stages it goes through from start to finish. It is a normal part of the pottery process to "lose a few", but we do what we can to minimize that risk. The studio is not liable for any pieces that do not survive.
- The pottery studio is located in a barn on a private property on IL-71 near I-80 in Ottawa, IL. The specific address and directions will be shared upon booking confirmation.
- Please be aware that the studio does not have air-conditioning. Wear comfortable, light clothing as the studio can become quite warm during the summer months. Bring a water bottle with a closed top to stay hydrated. The studio is heated during the cooler months.
- If you have long hair, we recommend securing it to keep it out of your face while working.
- Remove any jewelry on the hands and wrists prior to class.
- Long nails can be a challenge when working with clay, if you have the option to file them down before class you will be less likely to gouge your work.
- We recommend using the bathroom at home before you come if possible.
- At present we do not have a waiting room. Please notify us if you plan to bring someone to observe the class so we can ensure we have space in the studio and chairs available.
- Please do not bring children under the age of 6 to the studio. There are many fragile and/or dangerous items in the studio that are very interesting and tempting for little ones to touch.
