Frequently Asked Questions

Where are you located?

We are located in a red barn on a private farmette in Ottawa, IL minutes from the I-80 and IL-71 interchange.

Our address is
3213 IL-71
Ottawa, IL 61350

The studio is in the second barn on the left as you pull up the driveway. We do have ducks that live on the property, please be mindful of them! You may park on the gravel to the right of the studio building, in front of the studio, or in front of the barn on the right side of the driveway. Please avoid parking in the grass.

What should I wear to pottery class?

While we have an array of aprons available for student use at the studio, it is recommended that students wear clothing and shoes that are okay to get dirty and possibly stained.

Please be aware that the studio does not have air conditioning. Wear comfortable, light clothing as the studio can become warm during the summer months.

The studio does have a heater for the winter months.

If you have long hair, we recommend securing it to keep it out of your face while working.

Remove any jewelry on the hands and wrists prior to class.

Long nails can be a challenge when working with clay. If you have the option to file them down before class you will be less likely to gouge your work.

I took a pottery class. How long until I my pottery will be ready for pick up?

We dry the pottery very slowly to avoid cracking. Sometimes this can take anywhere from 1-4 weeks depending on the project and environmental factors. Once fully dry they are put into the kiln for 24+ hours for the initial bisque firing.

If you are planning on returning to glaze your pottery, you will be notified once it's been bisque fired to schedule your glazing session. This will happen within 2-5 weeks of your pottery class.

Please allow 2-3 weeks for Jacqueline to glaze your pottery for you if you do not plan to return for a glazing session.

Completed pottery is usually available for pick up within 4-8 weeks of the pottery class.

What temperature do you fire the pottery to?

For bisque firings we fire to either cone 08 (1,692-1,753 degrees F) or cone 04 (1,915-1,971 degrees F)

For glaze firings we fire to either cone 5 (2,118-2,205 degrees F) or cone 6 (2,165-2,269 degrees F)

Can I bring someone to watch the class?

Depending on the programming that day we may or may not have seating space for someone to observe the class. Please notify us if you would someone to observe so that we can confirm space and seating.

Please do not bring children under the age of 6 to the studio. There are many fragile and/or dangerous items in the studio that are very interesting and tempting for little ones to touch.

Does the studio have a public restroom?

Our bathroom is a small 3-season outbuilding near the rear of the studio. In the winter months, we can escort you up to the main house to use the bathroom if needed. We recommend using the bathroom at home before you come if possible.
